1) Who is eligible for this new "tuition assistance" program for kindergarten through 4th grade students?
- Families that reside within the St. Louis City limits
- Families that demonstrate financial need and whose child(ren) is not currently attending a City parochial or private elementary school
- Newly registered families in a parochial or private school for 08-09 prior to the announcement of the Program, are also eligible to apply
2) Some parents of students have a child already attending a parochial or private school. Why can’t they apply?
- The donors have stipulated that the scholarships are only for children currently in public schools
3) How long will the recipient receive the scholarship award and what are the criteria for renewal?
This grant will continue through 8th grade for these students IF:
- The family re-qualifies financially during school registration each spring
- The family continues to reside within St. Louis city limits
- The family keeps their part of tuition current
- The student maintains their good standing status in the school
4) How much is the grant per student? How will the grant be paid?
- ‘Eligible’ students will receive up to 75% of tuition or $2,000 maximum per year through 8th grade graduation toward tuition
- The grant will be paid directly to the school for a specific student to be applied toward tuition
- Every family is expected to pay $500 per child minimum tuition
5) How are scholarship award monies received?
- Schools receive 3 payments annually based upon total number of participants
6) What happens if the child changes schools?
- If a student changes schools during the school year, the grant will follow the student as long as they attend a City parochial or private K-8 school assuming they remain eligible and are a student in good standing. (Scholarship award payments are prorated based upon number of months child attended school)
7) What happens if the family becomes ineligible? Can the school use the funds for another child?
- If the student/family becomes ineligible, the grant is forfeited and cannot be assigned by the school to a different student
- Scholarship money is awarded by TTEF, not the individual school. Therefore, the school cannot reassign the scholarship to another student
8) Will older sibling(grade 5-8) be eligible for the grant for the 2008-09 school year?
Only if:
- A family qualifies, and
- The younger sibling(s) has been accepted by a school, and
- If the older sibling(s) is accepted as a student in “good standing” by a participating school
9) How will a family be informed if their child does not receive a scholarship award?
- Applicants that do not meet Eligibility Criteria requirements will be notified by TTEF
